Joseph McKenzie was appointed to St. Martins School of Art in 1954. His task was to introduce and teach photography, a first introduction and acceptance of the use of photography in the art establishment. While Joseph McKenzie later achieved recognition as a world acclaimed social documentary photographer much of his earlier work, produced at St Martins, evolved around the students and his fellow art colleagues.
This collection of work was produced by him around 1956 to provide the fashion students with material for their portfolios, these being used to promote their designs and abilities.
This work is being shown for the first time and as Joseph McKenzie had always had a social conscience it is believed that he did not promote this element of his work for fear of becoming pigeonholed as a fashion photographer.
